When I first began volunteering for the Foothills Caring Corps and agreed to do friendly visits, I was apprehensive about what I would encounter.
What I found was an opportunity, not only to bring brightness to the days of a delightful woman who could not easily get out of her home, but also to develop a friendship that has made every visit a pleasure and one that I look forward to every time.
Joanne and I share a great love of playing games. So our time together delivers an entertaining and challenging experience. While I am not happy to consistently lose our cribbage games, Joanne is kind enough to also play Scrabble which gives me a chance to retain my dignity.
The ability to exchange our life experiences and talk about our different interests enriches both of us. Sharing some of my time to enjoy a happy day with my new friend has been very fulfilling and valuable to me. It is truly wonderful that Joanne and I look forward to our visits and hope that we can continue this relationship for a long time to come. Volunteering for the Foothills Caring Corps has given me a deep appreciation of how offering a small piece of my time to enrich another’s life also enriches mine.
